I have seen this fly and it is one of the most horrendous inventions IMO.

Consider how far down the throat this fly goes in the wrong hands and where the hook ends up.

Should be banned from any water.

I have to say Kevin it is not a pattern I have ever looked at before or even considered at all. There will never be any in my boxes that is for sure.

Keven, I too work in a still water fishery, have been for the past eight years, this lure is no worse than any other. Any lure can be swallowed by a fish if fished incorrectly . I have been using my own variation of this lure for quiet some time now to imitate a leach and have never hooked a fish anywhere other than the lip. But then again it depends on how its fished. Just wanted to see how the original is tied.
James, thanks for the info, not quiet what i was looking for, but close enough.

Hi Mick

These have been around for a while and thankfully not many use them.My post was in no way directed at yourself, but I stand by what I have said they are monsters and I wouldnt call it a fly and would not want them fished anywhere near me.

Having seen them fished under indicators by some the results of being" lip hooked" are far from the norm and getting the fly back is more important than the fish by some that use them and the result is death of the fish.

These things are over 3 to 4inches long with the hook pointing upwards at the back, some use doubles on them, even trebles!

Maybe that is one of the reasons why it is hard to find online,no respecting fly company would sell these monsters and claim to call it a" Fly".

The snake fly was I think first tied by James Waltham as a sandeel imitation for sea trout, many argue that a tube is easier to tie and fish with. Not sure of its hooking qualities as I have have none but do know some sea trout lads that rate them early on in a session. The above SBS seems right.

No bother Kevin, I know where your coming from regards fishing them under a bung or fished static but then again any lure fished like this will result in deeply hooked fish and a lot of fatalities. Same applies to chucking out a booby or blob and waiting. Whatever about fishing buzzers under a bung this crack of fishing lure under one is just plain wrong imo. Genuinely have had no bother with deeply hooking fish using this lure, quirt the opposite i get a lot of tail nips, but then again I don't fish it static and I tie it with a single barbless hook pointing downwards.
