Default 101 Fly Tying Tips

A thread to build and share those little dodges and wrinkles we have found and learned along the way that make tying easier , quicker and more enjoyable.

To easily thread a bobbin holder ( Ditch Threader ) ..... Poke a couple of millimeters of thread in the top of tube leaving slack and suck on other end of tube .... Voila threaded.

Use a sharp blade like a scalpel blade or razor blade, instead of scissors, to cut the tensioned thread after making a whip finish. That way you only cut the thread and not the hackle fibres.

richard
another variation is to keep the thread tight and use the "V" of the scissors to cut, same principle and safer

Not tied any of my own flies for ages, but my tip would be to make sure you replace the lids on bottles of varnish etc as soon as your finished using it

Add a small amount of varnish to the thread just before whipfinishing
This saves you getting varnish on the hackles when finishing the small drys
fly .
Another is wet you finger tips before adding dubbing To the thread

when dubbing, pick out how much you think you need for the fly, then HALF it
