Nice job Steve , did you use a protractor to set that tail? PJ.

Cheers guys. Pretty simple to tie. No protractor PJ, just a piece of thread - otherwise it would be straight!

Thumbs up Re: A little BWO spinner

Lovely tying Steve.

As trout can't count I used to dress something fairly similar using 4 microfibbets in 2 outrigged pairs.

Nice.

That goose biot body - my biots are all a uniform colour. Did you space it to show the thread through and get that segmented effect? Or are your biots two-tone?

Most goose and turkey biots have a 'leading edge' which is slightly darker than the rest of the biot - this gives the segmented effect.

Watch Davie McPhail tying the biot body here:

Big fan of Davie, but even so, the contrast on Steve's biots seems unusually pronounced (and attractive) to me. Maybe its just the photography/magnification showing me things I've not noticed before.

I wondered about that also, the dark "ribbing" looks perfectly smooth and very distinct. I thought it Mylar or some other fine ribbing material. The photo is A++ quality that's for sure.

Yes that's what makes goose biots interesting for bodies although I was surprised how strong the contrast was. I suspect the outer edge took more of the brown dye than the inside. It's amazing how magnification can point out a lot of flaws. My original photo is considerably larger (16.7MP). I can see where the excess Gloss Coat snuck out between the wrappings. I am a right-hand tier and it would also appear that this biot is from the right wing of the bird as the wraps have not laid down as neatly as they could (having been wrapped against its natural curvature).

Davie's video above shows what happens when you tie a biot in "notch up" whereas mine were intentionally tied notch down. Notch up generates a fuzzy edge that sticks up whereas notch down means the smooth back edge wraps over the fuzzy leading edge.

Here's an actual pixel shot of the body:

Note the excess varnish undercoat (sloppy) and the thread used to spilt the tails.
