Default Coarse Hooks

Hi all, I was dragged around my local 'The Range' shop today and they had a fishing section. It was all coarse gear which I know nothing about but figured it would be more interesting looking at that than picture frames and vases

Anyway I spotted some small barbless hooks which looked like they might be OK to tie some flies with, the were only £1 for a pack of 20 so I picked up a size 14. The shank is quite short despite the packet saying medium, the eye is straight and they seem quite weighty but I tied a daiwl bach on one tonight and it looked fine.

My question is, will they work just as well as 'proper' game hooks and do any of you use coarse hooks to tie your flies? It says they are match hooks but can't remember the brand.

Cheers, Rob.

Don't see any reason why they shouldn't. I have plenty of coarse hooks and use some now and then. They all seem on the weighty side so should be ok for nymphy things. Needless to say for dry flies a lighter gauge is preferable and most coarse I have don't fit the bill.

Chris.

Thanks Chris, I'll give them a go then! I just wondered if there was some sort of design or makeup/manufacturing process which made them either coarse or game hooks.

Some of the carp hooks make good buzzers as they have a really chunky wire and add a lot of weight when you want to get down there.

Drennan specialist or Maver mt series are very good hooks if you want strength.
