Default Fly tying equipment for newby

I'm new to fly fishing and I want to start tying my own flies sooner rather than later?

Firstly I want a half decent vice that I won't have to replace within a few months.

Secondly I want advice on whether to get a starter kit with numerous materials included or should I get separate materials.

Where is the best place to get this all from?

Regards

Well, with regards to a vice it is a rather personal thing, I personally wouldn't buy a kit, there will be lots in it you won't use, so buy what your going to be fishing!!!!

there's a thread by avrojet a couple of days ago on the same subject

newbie wanting to try fly tying

IMO, starter kits are often a waste of money as you end up with a load of material that you never use.

A lot of people on here recommend a trade member, Grommit. Phone him, tell him you're a forum member and what you have in mind (kind of water fished, or particular flies you want to tie) and he'll treat you right and won't sell you a load of unnecessary gear.

Start basic and build up - it spins out the retail therapy side of things, anyway

Bill's advice is sound. Give Grommit a call, he sorted me out with tools and materials when I started.

Before you buy anything, see if there's a branch of Home & News near you, if so contact the sec. as he'll be able to advise you the best gear for your area & type of fishing.
