Best basic colours are red, black and olive and maybe brown. Also you want at least 8/0 diameter fine thread as thick normal sewing thread is far too bulky on smaller flies. Some times you can buy bulk thread packs, but to start that's not really necessary.

I'd suggest Black white tan olive dun and dark brown to start.

Buy white and a few permanent marker pens in the colours you want, then just colour the thread before you form the head

Unless you're wanting to use split thread dubbing techniques, I don't see a huge advantage in using UTC 70 over UNI 8/0. If bulk is the problem then I'd suggest looking at something finer than UTC 70. Or buy one spool of UTC 70 and try it out for yourself - see if it works better for you.

While UTC threads have their benifits for some things I would use them for you small flies.
Its not great for dubbing but can be done and you will still get bulk if you get it with uni.A suggestion to try for your uni thread tying is to flatten it by spinning it in reverse.
For small flies there are a number of threads you could try with sheer thread being a good option as it is like a much smaller uni thread.

Another vote for Benechi, I prefer it to Gordon Griffith's 14/0 for that sort of work & dislike the UTC stuff for anything other than finishing heads of streamers & the like. For those hook sizes it's to wide & needs constant re-spinning.

Hi horse apart from when tying spiders I find black and white cover all my needs ,nowadays I use black only on the darkest of paterns for everything else its white ,I like the Roman Mosser power silk although its quite expensive and Hends do a product called Syntron which is a double thread and very handy for split thread type tying and seems to bite hackle stalks very well . You wont feel it now and the real racing will be back. PJ
