Default CDC for beginners

hi lads

ive done a bit of searching but maybe missing the relevant threads

ive seen people before talking about certain types of cdc feathers
even numbering them and so on

i want to tie IOTBB's, shuttlecocks, small f-flys and the like
can i just buy any old cdc or is there specific types?
i also have no idea what quantity to buy?
i see a 5gm pack on offer on the classifieds here
is that an awful lot?

oh and btw, is there anything to stop me using foam for the shuttlecocks and IOTBB's
is it a better route? the ones ive bought have to be changed fairly regularly due to them getting drowned and saturated

many thanks

Here's a thread on types of cdc. Really helpful

CDC "Types"

You can use foam for the emergers but not for an IOTBB.
Personally I don't like foam emergers and prefer using cdc but that's largely a matter of personal taste.
The IOTBB IS cdc. Wouldn't be without it.

Yes cdc does need a lot of drying out. I think it is worth it, others don't.

5gms is quite a lot, but if you get into cdc, you can use a lot.

This is quite a good book on cdc with a few sbs in it. Worth getting if you're serious about cdc.

You beat me to it Bill I was just going to post this...

CDC types article

To start off a 1gm bag would probably do you but as Bill says once you realise how good it is and the different patterns you can tie you will need to stock up
