Default S-Fly FF&FT August issue

Can anyone clarify for me if they have read the article on tying the S-Fly by Neil Patterson that after tying in the two cdc plumes vertically for the wing and antennae the third plume is tied flat ie at right angles to the first wing then dubbed?

Like the look of this wee flee.

Yes, an interesting pattern! Maybe the third plume tied flat over the two side wings, then pulled through to splay out, helps to form an enclosed air chamber, as well as the all important silhouette.

The CDC flue stripped from all three plumes, with the root ends trimmed off, is used to dub the body forward of the wings.

Interestingly the CDC wings/antennae are tied in 2/3 down the hook shank, with the CDC dubbed body carried up to the eye. Not sure why, maybe the wing towards the back of the hook helps to keep the hook bend up.

Say what you like about Mr Patterson, but for many years i have regarded him as a highly analytical exponent of fly design!

I'm finding it harder and harder to take trout on adult sedges to be honest, especially those with CDC wings and / or bodies.

I think my best pattern so far is Bob Wyatts Hares ear and Deer Hair pattern ( sparce ) ....i can never remember the name of it , which is supposed to represent all sorts. he says he uses is 80% of the time and i can see why.

Phil at Spidersplus is tying me some La Fontaine sparkle wing sedge patterns and i am hoping they will work, but things like Bubble Winf CDC patters ( Ollie Edwards ) havent scored for me this season

Bob Wyatts one is on his DVD . Awesome fly.
