Yes, an interesting pattern! Maybe the third plume tied flat over the two side wings, then pulled through to splay out, helps to form an enclosed air chamber, as well as the all important silhouette.
The CDC flue stripped from all three plumes, with the root ends trimmed off, is used to dub the body forward of the wings.
Interestingly the CDC wings/antennae are tied in 2/3 down the hook shank, with the CDC dubbed body carried up to the eye. Not sure why, maybe the wing towards the back of the hook helps to keep the hook bend up.
Say what you like about Mr Patterson, but for many years i have regarded him as a highly analytical exponent of fly design!
