Default CDC flies

Many Thanks to Richard (Devon Flyfisher) who sent me some CDC and bronze mallard. I've tied up a few flies with them including my first Dabbler (which needs a bit of work). Any comments, advice and suggestions for further CDC patterns are most welcome,

You have got the right idea and no doubt they will catch fish, but the saying less is more applies to your flies especially your f fly a lot less dubbing, how many cdc feathers did you use on that one ? yes the secret with dubbing is pinch what you think will be enough, then halve it!!!!!!!!!

It does look a bit Porky, I'll be a bit more sparing with the dubbing next time

Which sort of dubbing is it natural or synthetic?

It's a mix of seals fur, synthetic and squirrel hair

Hi Gizmo
The best of the bunch has to be flash wing. The f fly isn't really an f fly and I would take a look at the original as it is a simple pattern and very effective without any addition.Dabblers are not the easiest of ties to get the proportions right and I would suggest some simpler palmered flies before, then starting cloaking as you need to leave more room for the cloak and try not to build so many wraps to minimize the head.
I would concentrate on one pattern at a time rather than going all out to tie loads of patterns even though we all did at first and its tempting when you get a new bag of goodies but in the long run it makes sense.

Firstly...i would use any one of these no problem and im sure they would catch.

As stated above a little less dubbing and cdc on the f fly.

Also, if you start further back from the eye (a few mm) you will find it easier to get a nice neat head. I was taught that every turn of the thread should be there for a reason.

Hope this helps and keep posting the pics.

Paul

To be honest I did find the Dabbler a bit tricky to tie and as the emergers seem popular with my local Trout I'll probably stick with them for the time being

I must admit it's a bad habit I'm developing of crowding the eye, it's something I'm going to have to watch. It's really annoying to spend time tying up a fly only to realise you haven't enough space to finish off comfortably.

I do it too mate. Its pretty frustrating.

Have a look here for dabblers...‪DavieMcPhail's Channel‬‏ - YouTube

And here for your f fly....‪DavieMcPhail's Channel‬‏ - YouTube

Davie Mcphail is my go to place on you tube for most patterns and i tend to stop the videos and follow them religously until i am confident with the tecniques. He tells us exactly where to tie in your materials whish is a godsend to me.

He has improved my tying alot!

Tight lines

He's the chap I've been watching but I'm still a bit fumble fingered when it comes to the tying, it'll come with practice though.
