Just been reading some of my old mags[feb.2010] its an article by Robert MacDougall-davis "all eyes on Sawers nymph" and he uses tmc100 for his flies, surely this is classed as an emerger hook so why use it with a bead on it?or have i got this ar*e about face.

That stretch of the Avon that flows past Bulford (or those that fish it) seem to have strong views on what Sawyer did with his nymphs so you are probably quite correct. On the other hand all things evolve, surely?

The tmc 100 is regarded as a dry fly hook as far as I know but why it was used I dont know as it then got plenty of copper wire tied to the fly to weight it .Either that or it was the only hooks that he had.

The Sawyer Nymph, as recorded in 'Elements of Nymph Fishing' by his very close neighbour Maj Oliver Kite, was tied on size 1, 0, or 00 down turned Limerick hooks.

Tiempco's hold of the British market only a gleam in Toshinori Shimoda's eye. In post war Great Britain - the early 50s - even the thought of importing Japanese hooks would have been risible.

Great hook for small nymphs. I use the TMC 100 for Al Troth's variant of this fly.
