Question Circle hooks for tyeing flys?

Was asked an interesting question over in Montana a few days ago. Chatting with one of the 'locals' and he asked if I'd ever used 'Circle Hooks' for tyeing flies.

Had to admit the answer was 'no,' and I didn't recall ever seeing any done up that way. I can imagine there are some salt water flies that they may be appropriate, but anyone seen a 'fresh water' fly tied up that way?

I've used some Sakuma circle hooks in size 10 and 12 for a Klinkhamer style of fly and they work really well.

I have used guru circle hooks for carp bread "flies". Bit expensive but excellent hook up and hold

I use Tiemco 212Ys for most of my Klinks now. They are not circle hooks but they are sure heading in the right direction.

Chris.

Have the fellows e-mail address so if someone could post up 'examples' I'd be pleased to forward on the link. Hell, I'm darned interested too! Interesting part is I had no idea they made circle hooks in the 10-12 range.

If available here, a well guarded secret; so what's new?

I have tied buzzers on some Fulling Mill circle hooks and fished them as an experiment to see if the 'no strike' method worked. It didn't. I would be really interested in peoples experiences with these and how you actually fish them. Admittedly they only had one outing, but I had several takes and no hook ups so gave up and went back to using my usual Kamasan B110's and B100's.

Does it make a difference that I was fishing them in still water rather than a river where trout typically take and turn?

Fred if you can't get them in the sizes you want over there, PM me and I will get them here and send you some (I have about 40 unused size 12's already!).

I fish the FM circle hooks under a bung with the rod tip pointing towards the bung, when the bung goes under I draw a couple of feet of line back in a straight line and usually connect with a positive hook up, hope this helps.

I tried a few ties on circle hooks a few years ago but didn't like the look of them and gave up without giving any of them a swim. Any pattern tied on a circle needs to be one that the fish will take into its mouth with confidence as they will not work properly otherwise.

Buzzers might work and that's what I tied but I can't see too many other patterns being taken with that sort of confidence.
