Default essential dry flies

Hi Forum
I am interested in your opinions what dry fly patterns are essential for:
1. reservoir trout fishing?
2. loch trout fishing?
What must you have in your boxes?
Is it just a top 10 with variants of colour and size?

If its not a well known pattern could you include a photo and tying details.

Now I have already asked this question on the general forum but got no answers Can you guys help educate me please.

I found an old thread from 1 year ago approx called 'default dries' and it was very interesting , great photo's etc.
Does anyone have details of the 'crippled midge' by Stan H ???

Whatcha Graham,

Am fairly new to the dry fly lark, but I treat reservoirs and lochs just the same. I like:

1 Bob's Bits - size 12 and 14 - black
2. Fiery brown sedgehog, size 10. I like adding some hopper legs to it. I use this when fishing "washing line" style.
3. Red irresistible - size 12 and 14 - it's basically a grey parachute/emerger type thing, tied on a curved hook with a red holo tag.
4 G&H sedge - size 12 and 14.

I bet I can predict what other folk will come up with too... but the above is what's been working for me.

Afraid I don't have details of the crippled midge.

Neil

Reservoir

Bob's Bits Size 12 and 14 in Black and Red

Hoppers size 10 and 12 in Black, Claret and Orange (including popper hoppers)

CDC shuttlecock style size 10 and 12 in red/orange/yellow mix
Claret

that would do me !

Failing that a nice orange Booby !

Top 5 drys for my local loch -
1/ Hell's Half Hog Hopper (10's and 12's)
2/ Amber Hopper (10's and 12's)
3/ Hare's Ear Emerger (listed pics, materials on 18th July under Fly Tying Forum)
4/ Hare's Ear CDC (12's and 14's)
5/ Heather Fly (10's and 12's).

They are all quite straggly and leggy, but work well for me.
John.

I think of it in terms of profiles.......erse under,....flat on top,....high riding.
Klinks, raiders and shuttles......shippies, bits and hoppers....sedgehogs and f/flies.Those coupled with some upwings and beetles should see you alright for most situations.

Sorry about the **** pics.
The two above have been doing the job for me the last few outings.
Hoppers 10,12s colours depending on time of year.
Big reds 10,12s
Bobs bits 12,14s
and the good old Shipmans also shuttlecocks in various colours.

Cheers Craig

Aye, great on the lake on a midge hatch, gink it up,, pull the fly doon through the water, then the fish hammer it as it comes back up
