Default Starter kit?

I'm just about to try out tying my own flies, so I'm going to buy a kit to get myself going. I know the Materials army going to be up to much and probably arnt as good as most, but will the kit be okay to get myself going?

Cheers fellas.

Quite honestly, there seems to be quite a lot of stuff in that kit that you don't really need to start off with.
Is somebody going to show you how to get started?

I think Grommit Trade member on here can sort you out something. Try sending him a pm?

I would base your materials on the type of flies you tie. Use the SBSs on here to work out what you need and buy just them for now. Some kits are poor quality

all the best Nick

My father ties and has a few books I can borrow to get me started. I'm usually good at learning by myself because I get more hands on rather than being told how to do it and have the teacher showing off (sounds like my dad) haha!

Few books and video tutorials and ill be half way there. Or if you could list the basics to get me going perhaps I'd purchase those instead as I wouldn't want to buy stuff I'm not going to use.

Cheers

As stated, Grommit on here has a good reputation (I think he may be away for a couple more days yet) and will sort you out and give fair advice.

You need a vise. (there is already a thread running on here about budget vises)
You need a bobbin threader and a pair of hackle pliers.
I like a whip finish tool, but they are not essential and some very good tiers don't use them.
You need a sharp pair of scissors - you probably have one already and there's another thread on here about scissors.
A dubbing needle is useful also for applying varnish and clearing the eyes of varnish.. An ordinary darning needle or similar will do perfectly well.
you can make your own velcro brush.
A good light source is important.

No need to break the bank. That comes later

Oh, it's only a few things for now then. Amazon, here I come! (the website o mean)

Any specific materials? I basically only fish for trout on lakes Lakes and just about to attempt rivers for the first time, so you know what type of flies I use.

Cheers guys.

Before buying a vise in particular, from Amazon, I'd check out on here if it's any good. You don't have to spend a fortune but you don't want to spend it twice if your first vise is cr@p.

I'd give Grommit a pm. Tell him your budget and where you plan to fish - he'll put you right.
