Default Struggling with whip finish

I am using a thompson whip finish tool and I thought i was doing well till i realised that i was whiping off towards myself rather than the way that im winding the thread. It still locks in and gets a good finish but obviously it is wrong. When going the proper way it seems to slip and slide. Was wondering if what i was doing orignally is ok if not i think I need to change to a different whip finish tool so what whip finish tool would you advise.

Cheers Alex

You need a Matarelli or a Dr Slick from the Flytying Boutique .

Chris.

Not quite sure what you mean, but hope this helps:

If you have a big build up of tied in materials at the head, causing a steep taper of the head, the whip finish turns can slip off over the eye. Try tilting the hook shank up a bit to level off the taper while you whip finish. Keeping the whip finish turns tight will also help to prevent them slipping off.

Too much emphasis is placed on the whip finish. If you use a fine point needle to dab some waterproof superglue onto your thread, then turn the thread in as normal, without a whip finish. Dab dry and coat with varnish. Job done.

Bit of wax on the thread will help stop it slipping off too.
