Default Fine tying thread

What would members recommend?

I'm just setting out tying small dries using cdc and clearly need some finer thread than I usually use.

Bill,

You will find the 14/0 thread here:

Flytying Boutique - for unusual and interesting materials

Surprisingly strong for the size - very little build up for your small dry patterns - and a great range of colours...

I use this for tying down to size 24.

Kind regards

Bill,
I've used 14/0 quite a lot in the past (Gordon Griffiths used to do me unwaxed Sheer to special order) but these days I can't see past Synton threads for the small stuff. This is an extremely fine twin-strand material which, incidentally, is perfect for small scale split-thread dubbing techniques, and it is amazingly strong for its thickness (or, rather, thinness). Phil Holding used to sell it, but as he is now recommending 14/0 perhaps he is no longer carrying it. You could always ask him.

I really like the Griffiths Sheer, and would love to use it a lot more. The trouble is though, each of the 3 spools i have of it, soon started sprouting random loops of thread from several parts of the windings! I could go on to explain the processes i use just to get a few flies out of it, but it would take a lot of typing!
I love the stuff, and I would buy a lot more of it if not for the problem above.

For small flies I mainly use sheer thread I have in the past had a few issues with the spooling of it but in the main a very good thread.
