Default snatchers?

What makes a snatcher a snatcher?

Talking to a guy at the weekend who had caught a brownie on a snatcher at my local loch. he showed me it and it was mainly red, the 2nd time someone has recommended red flies there.
Back to the question though, I googled it and it seems you can tie any pattern in a snatcher syle but I cant really see what the difference is!

Well I like fishing them nice and slow later at night and have found them more effective at that time than a heavier palmered fly

Thats just it though Kev....they dont fish or look radically different to a sparsely palmered wet do they....? Ive got plenty of those....nae need for snatchers.... In fact some of the snatchers I see in use are dressed on heavy B-110s and are heavilly palmered...they bear very little resemblance to the original. They seem to work though eh so who cares....

If we were sure the curved profile was what was turning the fish on to the fly...would it no be better using a proper buzzer pattern rather than something that is neither one thing nor another....

so I guess you do the palmering sparsely by using less turns that are further apart?

Yes...or try removing the flue off one side of the hackle.

Think the originals were also tied with a slimmer body than most palmers. This with the sparse hackle gives a different profile to normally dressed palmers which can be effective especially when fished slow. Better or worse than a lightly dressed palmer, could debate it forever. I mostly tie them slightly round the bend on b160s, gets the profile, lighter than b110 but stronger than B100, works for me but better or worse who knows? each to their own i suppose.

Thats a fair point John,I think a lot of my flies are probably slimmer than average.so I just never saw enough of a difference between snatchers and my sparse stuff to bother about....apart from the curved hook that is.
