Default Salmon hooks

Hi folks,

Hoping someone can give me some advice regarding salmon hooks. I now have some tying gear so don't want to be spending $$$ on salmon flies.. Even the simple flies are so bloody dear... 4euros or so here in Ireland...

I wish to tie simple flies on single hooks. What i am looking for is advice on the siZe and make of the hooks. Also, i am looking for a supplier who sells them cheap if possible.. I note that with my trout hooks the prices vary a fair bit and i'm sure they do with salmon hooks too...

thanks,
JJ

Hi JJ, glad to hear you're having a go at your own salmon flies.

Try Ian Woods, Grommit. 25 Kamasan low water salmon single irons for less than a fiver.

Kamasan B180 Salmon Low Water Single Hook

For cheap double hooks try Mick Bell, (Bloke), here's his web site.

All his fly tying hooks are on special, buy a pack get another pack free. The silver hooks are not perfectly finished, but they're strong and sharp, and CHEAP. I'm using them and they've not let me down. Similar to Partridge salars but a longer shank which makes tying a bit easier. The black doubles, and the black trebles are cracking for the price.

Thanks for the advice... i'l get in contact with grommit for the singles. Looks like great value for the mashama hooks. Any idea why the silver hooks are so much cheaper than the black ones??

Thanks very much for the reply..

cheers
JJ

Other way about JJ, £6.10 for a pack of silver or gold doubles. £4.00 for black doubles or trebles. BOGOF gets you decent doubles for just over 30p a hook. I seen Salars on sale at the Scottish Game Fair for 90p a hook. Yes there's something sexy looking about salar hooks, but the fish aren't interested in what I think. The silver doubles, like I say aren't as perfectly smoothed on finish as salars but it doesn't affect the integrity of the hook whatsoever and is covered up with your first run of thread.

The hook gape on the doubles is not as wide as Partridge salars and the hook sizes are not quite the same. If you're after size 10s get the 8's.

arkle will become famous soon enough

Silvered & similar hooks are plated in a chemical bath in virtually 1 operation. Black Japanned hooks are dipped in enamel, they are then separated, to dry so more operations & handling are needed.

Thanks mate, but wouldn't that mean that the black hooks should be more expensive?

cheers

JJ I don't have the answer to that, but could it possibly be that silver hooks are all the rage these days, supply and demand, etc....

At 20p a throw (with the BOGOF deal) the black hooks are great. The trebles are really good and flawless looking, with a nice long shank.

I hope Mick sees this and chucks me in some freebs next time.
