Lovely tying.
The head on the first fly seems comparatively large - is that deliberate or due to the bulk of the wing? (I never really mastered traditional wings)

Nice looking flees there, i prefer the second one only because of its slimmer wing but very nice

Yes I wouldn't normally tie wings for spiders on size 16's as once you get down to this size its quite difficult to keep bulk in the head down to a minimum, so it was just an experiment, although you could split the pearsalls thread to keep the thickness down and its also more difficult to judge proportions for wings etc so a bit hit and missy....back to size 14's for me.
To make this more clearer, below is a winged spider tied on a size 17, notice the bulkiness in the head and the out of proportion wings, mind you if I was really clever....and I'm not, I would tie in the hackle fibres with the winging loop at the same time to conserve thread wraps.....scary

A very good attempt but this approach is more like a traditional wet.
The following is hoe spiders were winged (Tied by Bob Smith probably one of the very best spider fly tiers).Click the image to open in full size.
The trick is fold the wings and then split them using a single figure of eight through the wing.

Very nice again Mark. Trouble with this tying lark is you need different thread gauges. I tend to use 8 for 10 -16 hooks and then go finer for smaller hooks, ie 12 and 17 gauge.

Thats interesting, i wasn't aware that there was a special technique for the tying of spider wings which is why I've used the 'traditional wet method'. I've always tied just the hackled spiders which I prefer the look of to winged ones, but I seem to be going through a winged stage at the moment for some reason. Where's the link by the way? it doesn't seem to work.

Thanks wobbly, so its either split the pearsalls or get finer gauges, which knowing me i will end up snapping both, but i think you can get stronger finer threads.

Hi Mark,
UTC ultra thread 70 Denier, same as 17 gauge. Uni thread Trico.
I do like the Uni -Mono. Size 4m. No good for dubbing and has no colour. Thought of using this for tippet material for very small wild brownies in brooks and small streams.
Semperfli Nano silk in very fine and can be split with care, looses it's colour though.
