Default First Fly Vice

I am looking at starting to tie some of my own flies, having got hooked on fly fishingby my father in law who has got me to be his partner for the last 2 competitions on a 'cancer fundraiser' at Pitsford reservoir for Northampton general hospital for the last 2 years.

I bought my own rod, reel etc a couple of months ago, and now want a vice.

What would you recommend, i have a budget for the vice of about £40.

Look forward to getting your suggestions

Thanks

David

How about this on Ebay 120740526450. To be honest I use one of these 320718701015 it's a cheapy but it gets the job done without parting with big bucks. I've had mine for 3 years and tie Bass and Pike flies (how I got started) down to #16's and have had no problems so far. Can't say it'll last a lifetime and it's not finely engineered by skilled craftsmen but it works.

Shamus, I live in Moulton so only about 2 miles from Pitsford.

When am I fishing next? Not sure 100%, wife just gave birth to a new baby boy so I am grounded for a week or two to help her out.

This is annother reason why I want to try tying as it gives me something else to do in the evenings rather than watching dull tv.

Are there any benefits of clamp versions over pedestal, or vice-versa?

Are they both as stable as each other?

Or is it just personal preference?

Take a good look at the Weaver range of vices, that just happen to be British made. Sportsfish & others keep them.

They will both be stable enough. Some favour the pedestal because it can be used anywhere. The clamp (obviously) needs clamping. If the table is posh 'she' won't be to impressed by you marking it .

Chris.

the flymate is a very good vice for the money but don't buy the ball joint version its prone to breaking ... i have a fly mate myself the pedestal which i prefer as you can move it around to suit where your tying
