Tried to p.m. you but got "database error" am also having various "issues" with my phone & i.p connection. Anyway, there are not that many if us here on this forum that tie trad, salmon flies, probably less than a handful self included.

My own thought's are it happened around the Victorian era, when tinsel from military dress was first used. The millinery trade was also in full swing then & lots of now very rare feathers were used for making extravagant ladies hats.

Probably the best place to get more specific answers on this is Classic Fly Tying (Powered by Invision Power Board) where many of the worlds leading tyers are.

Certainly in Ireland, the Rogan dynasty of Ballyshannon used JC at the turn of the 18th century and EJ Malone has photos of some of these in 'Irish Trout & Salmon Flies'

O'Gorman used JC cheeked flies as early as 1785 and in his book refers to the scarcity of 'the breast and top-knot from this valuable foreign bird' so they must have been expensive even in those days!

Perhaps some research in Kelson or the like would provide some information on earlier use of JC in Scotland and elsewhere
