i have managed to catch a few fish on some of them.

i have been varnishing them with veniard varnish and a dubbing needle.

how do i get a nice smoothe, glass like finish, as i have seen with so many of the buzzers i see on here.

i know they are a bit rough but any comments or constructive criticism is well apreciated

thanks in advance

bob

Bob, get yourself to your Chemists and ask for a bottle of Sally Hansens Hard as Nails.
The brush supplied with the bottle can take off as well as put on. Apply 3-4 coats, but let them set hard between them. This can take days.

After you've married the girl behind the counter you may move on to UV cures, but make sure they're them slim underneath.

Sally Hansen is time consuming - I allow 6 hours between coats.

Regular Epoxy is a messy pain in the erse to work with in my opinion.

Bug bond looks quick and easy but a bottle of bug bond lite and the uv light will set you back around £30

I'm sure your buzzers will catch fish. The current fashion seems to be for slimmer bodies - more like picture 1 but with a smaller thorax. But then, fish don't follow fashions.

I dont know how many coats of varnish you apply but 2-3 thin coats on the body will give you the look you are looking for(allow several hours between coats for drying)
As brownsville says sally is good but rimmel and a few other brands are just as good. Those buzzers will catch no problem but as has been said try slimming the body down-I find the fish will get more fussy about their buzzer appearance at this time of year

all the best Nick

Yes, it looks like you have been dabbing your varnish on to possible a previous coat which may still have been tacky, not fully dried.

Dab on a coat of varnish, leave for at least 6 hours to fully harden, this will give you an excellent base (prime) for your over coats.

Put plenty varnish (don't go crazy) on the needle and run it down the back of the fly (top) then with clean excess off the needle and use the tip of the needle to gently spread the varnish (it will already be spreading over the sides down towards the underside) but don't touch the body at all, just using the fine tip of the needle to spread the varnish.

Wait until DRY and turn fly upside down, repeat the process with a little less varnish this time. YOu will then get the smooth glassed-over appearance you are looking for.

Apart from that, the fish won't mind. Your flies will catch fish.

The big advantage with nail varnish is that it comes with a brush which makes it dead easy to apply. Unlike some, I prefer a needle for fly heads, but when covering a larger area, a brush makes it much easier.

I've been using bug bond with a coat of varnish over the top.

Great that your catching on your own ties, regardless! I do agree with the others though that I prefer my buzzers a bit slimmer.

please note never put superglue on varnish or vice verser as the chemical reaction turns the varnish cloudy after a day or so .(i learnt that through make the error )
you can get sally hansen on the net (eBay for around £4-5 for a double packet )
i got 10 packs a month ago and ive now sold the lot .
Oh Argos was selling sally diamond finish (same **** difo name for £1 bottle last week)

These buzzers have 6 coats of Sally Hansen

Click the image to open in full size.

I give the first coat 12 to 14 hours to set and the following coats could be done about every 3 hours to be safe
the guys on here put me right for buzzer varnishing
regards Scott
