Default Scotch on't rox dabbler

All this talk of dabblers, well a few mumbles anyway, got me having a go at one, don't usually tie these but seeing as they can be used to imitate a good few things they're definitely one you should never be without in your flybox. Although I do use bronze mallard in a few patterns that i've tied the wing on this one is perhaps a shade too long, but plenty more BM to have a go at a few more.

Aye Mark, for a 'standard' Dabbler, the Mallard element is just a tiny wee shade on the long side. As a fly in it's own right though it's a lovely tie. Nowt wrong with having a couple on the long side in't box

Cheers Rob, thanks for the feedback, nice to get some tips from the experts before I go and make a few more, with shorter wings this time think wing length = tail length = length of hook with dabblers so i'll work on that principle.

Nice tie and pics Mark.
I tend to tie my dabblers wings so that they go about half the length of the tail and not just to the back of the hook.

Thanks dabhoy, I suppose there's a bit of flexibility involved, but as Rob says for the standard tying of a dabbler the bronze mallard is too long on mine, i just imagined after reading your post, if it went to half the length of the tail, I think that would be about right IMO...

nice mix of materials mate, as been said the wing is too long.
no longer than half way into the tail is about the best measurement

Thanks mate, think i'll declassify this one as not a dabbler, might be good for a few river run seatrout though

im not saying its not a dabbler mate, just the wings too long..
it would pick up a few trout and sea trout, bit like a gosling.
but for retaining balance in the flys measurements the exagerations should be limited aswell IMO. a bit like a wing on a dry if you go too big it interfears with the flys character as it draws attention from the rest of the appealing body, tail, ribbing etc.. just my concept, tye them how you like
