Default Fly Tying Kit for a Youngster

Hi my 9 year old pictured below wants to spend his birthday money on a fly tying kit.

Click the image to open in full size.

What do you guys recommend for a kit.

I have only just started fishing again because the boy likes fishing but have never tied flies.

I am not to worried about materials as we are deer stalkers so have plenty of access to deer skins and game bird capes. The rest we can pick up as and when.

The main thing is to get some good quality tools and a vice.

He currently has £40 towards a kit.

All advice greatfully recieved.

Best to start off relatively cheap. At that age there is no guarantee he will stick with it, then if he does take to it you can slowly improve your equipment, tools etc...

you could try 2nd hand as well, seems there are plenty people try then change their mind.

Ebay seems a bit more expensive than gumtree.

I got an unused veniard premium fly tying kit + vice for £20 from gumtree and haven't spent much on additional materials yet.

Of course you don't get the instant gratification of just getting it at the shops which might be important at that age, my boy is a way off being that old so I'm not sure

Don't buy a kit would be my thought. Often padded with stuff you will never use and poor quality hooks etc. I started with a kit when I came back to fishing. Was not a good plan.

Go for a basic vise like the regent, retail under £20 I think, you can go cheaper to allow more materials if you must but I wouldn't. Bobbin holder and scissors, couple of threads (black, olive and red in 8/0). Copper and gold wire. Pack or two of hooks to suit where you fish. Varnish.

Learn to whip finish by hand and buy a tool later. Needle from a sewing kit in a cork for dubbing needle.

You can tie basic buzzers from this material. Cheeks cut from crisp packets etc.

Then if you have access to pheasant tail, rabbit pelts etc start tying them into PTN's, GRHE's and then build from there.

Cheers,
Mark

First get some fly tying lessons. Then work out what flies you want to tie on a regular basis. Only buy what you need not what you think you may use. Gradually expand the fly tying materials when you have more experienced and know what you use on a regular basis.
