Try going to ebay.com if you want a real shock. Or better still try googling feather hair extensions, then go & try the images button & follow the pretty pictures. You shouldn't have to go to far to see that some places are charging $25 + PER FEATHER.

OMG What is the world coming to, that is ridiculous.

Heard the fashion business were buying up capes, how long will it be before they're totally out of reach for us mere fly tyers. Its not cheap anyway but this is going to really hurt the fly tying community if capes become scarce.

From the Web Site of above pic

Whiting farms harvest about 1,500 birds per week for their feathers, and still can not keep pace with its orders, said owner and founder Tom Whiting, poultry geneticist. The company stopped taking new accounts.

“I tried to keep some of the world for fly fishing, because when the trend of fashion goes, it will be, I still make a living,” he said.

The company was one that Bernstein said in Maine a few months ago that the rooster saddle feathers somehow become the latest hair coveted. Bernstein said it was fun he could reach his shop along the coast of southern Maine.
“This man, this is not California. We’re a bit behind the trend here,” he said. “I messed up I had to say.” Send me everything you got. ”

Inventory of cock feathers Bernstein saddle long since exhausted. Three weeks ago, he was hit in the neck feathers of a rooster, which is set aside for fly Classes link in the store. Neck would normally cost $ 29.95, but the store sold for $ 360.

It is not uncommon to find a bunch of cock feathers saddle, which cost about $ 60 for the whole store now, priced at $ 200 to $ 400.

Package of the most popular fly hackle hair tie, black and white striped feathers called Grizzly saddle, generally retail from $ 40 to $ 60. It sold for $ 480 on eBay last month after 31 bids.

Variations on this thread have been posted quite a few times since early this year. The search facility at the top of the page will doubtless be of help for those needing further info on this subject.

Since i started tying a few months ago(6) it was vey hard as i started in the middle of this mad saddle etensions, so I have to resort to tying with chinese necks which is very very hard, especially if you mostly tie wets....

Things really do seem to be getting out of hand on the price of capes and saddles.

I think it's time for some clever innovative fly tier to come up with an alternative to genetic hackles. Don't you go looking at me-no way am i innovative. We need someone with brilliant ideas-someone like toxic evo or such.!
