Default more hackle misery

Hi folks,

another hackle question:

when a pattern calls for two feathers (say grizzle and red) to be used in a hackle (like in an Adams), do you wind them one at a time, or both at the same time? Either way seems to come out a total mess!

And how do you wind them past hackle point wings without it all developing into a hideous tangle??

Thanks,

Matt

some tyres will wind them 1 at a time, others will wind them both at the same time while others will wind the brown one first.

its all a matter of tyers preference

winding the hackle in close turns has never produced the "hideous tangle" you mention

Genetic saddle hackles make it a LOT easier, as the thinner stems give you more control. These feathers are also often flatter in cross-section then the neck ones, which also aids tying. I've found, my best method is to wind one after the other & in the same direction.

I would suggest you try wingless flies like Richardw's excellent Step-by-steps on this forum for Grey Dusters etc. Walk firstt and just get the manual dexterity practised, and find a friend to teach you.

Once you've added your hackle point wings and positioned them properly it's then easier to make two or three wraps(turns) Behind the wings, then two or three in front-no more turns are necessary as it will then be too bulky.

Have a look at this blogpost. Scroll down for the easiest way to tie and wind multiple hackles.
