Default Fly tying necessities.

Hi folks,

I fish predominately North Country rivers & have recently started getting my tying kit together & botching up my own flies

I've got a few books, notably The Fly Tying Bible & Mike Hardings wonderful guide to North Country Flies, however, I'm a bit agog at the amount of materials available, so rather than buy anything & everything, please may I ask the more experienced North Country tyer's what are the must haves in your tying kit?

Cheers

Simon

Having spent too much money on random stuff that I didn't really need or use, the best advise I can give is decide on the flies you want to tie and then buy the materials. Don't do it the other way round!!

IMHO you're better off buying good quality materials for a limited number of flies (that you will actually use), rather than buying loads of cheaper stuff on a whim!

All the best

Thumbs up Re: Fly tying necessities.

Good question, here's my 'Go To' reference book. Lots of other books on fly patterns, some very good, some so-so. But the bottom line is NOT what goes into a particular tie, but how do you do it?

This is a book you can open to any page and I guarantee you will learn something. Better yet, if there's more than one way to achieve the result (usually) the fellows will cover all of them in clear precise (read that understandable even to a Newbie) language.

Amazon.com: The Fly Tier's Benchside Reference (9781571881267): Ted Leeson, Jim Schollmeyer: Books Amazon.com: The Fly Tier's Benchside Reference (9781571881267): Ted Leeson, Jim Schollmeyer: Books

Can you give us a list of the flies you like at the moment?

As the other have said create a list of what you wish to make.
Phil Holding at Spiders Plus/Fly Tying Boutique and Steve Cooper at Cookshill-Flytying are both well respected people and should have the materials you will need to get started.

If your'e just starting to tie spiders i'd say start with the classic spider patterns i.e. partridge and orange, waterhen bloa, snipe and purple, dark watchett, dark snipe and orange, snipe bloa, woodcock and red, stewarts black spider etc.

So all you would need is say a decent english partridge skin - hen (this will last for ages and you can pick and choose which size feathers you need). I got mine from cookshill and it's an excellent skin.

Pair of woodcock wings

Pair of snipe wings or preferably a snipe skin for a larger selection of feathers (can be hard to get hold of and you won't get that many spider hackles out of them, so as long as your'e not going onto production you'll be ok)

Pair of waterhen wings (again can be hard to get hold of but worth it if you can).

Starling skin

Jackdaw scalp

Moleskin and waterrat skin and ofcourse the appropriate pearsalls silk bobbins.

Traditional patterns are great for learning how to tie them correctly and in the right proportions, you might be better starting off first on size 12 hooks and work your way onto the smaller hooks as you get better at tying them.

I think Richard has hit the nail on the head-draw up a list of the flies you use regularly ,then use SBSs to draw up a list of materials required. Some will be duplicated or offer alternative materials, so you can decide what to buy

all the best Nick

Wingman is dead on with his list. These Pearsalls: gold 6a, yellow 4, scarlet 11a and purple 8 will keep you busy for a good while.

Chris.

True, if these are for the flies he wants to use. He still hasn't given us his list so any answers can only be guesswork and possibly a waste of time.

Wingman you read my mind there fella, absolutely bang on

I was lucky enough to win an auction for a job lot of Pearsalls silks on Ebay, sold by PP to be honest, at a reasonable price, so couple that with the list Wingman gave I should be top of the pops for spiders & the like

Righty now to sort the wheat from the chaff in my fledgling kit & time for it to be sold

Thanks for all the input guys
