Might be an idea, although I have posted as a beginner this year and have not been slaughtered, even though my flies leave a lot for improvement. On the whole I have received qualified observations suggesting what can be improved, which is what I wanted when I posted it.

I think part of the attraction of the fly tying forum is the mixed ability. Gives the newbies something to aspire to plus a little encouragement and old hands can still be taught a thing or two by the newcomers at times. Think it would be a shame to separate it out as you'd lose the comments from experienced tiers on newcomers work (lets face it most experienced tiers wouldn't visit a new tiers section much if at all).

I think it is ok as it is. I've not noticed any newbie being "Slaughtered" Best to keep all tying related articles in the one place. We have enough sub sections as it is.

Just post them on here. Any destructive critic can expect the rest of the forum to metaphorically tear them an new αnus, so rest assured no one will needlessly have a nasty go at you. The important thing is to keep tying and if you want any hints, show us the problems and someone on here will know how to fix them and let you (and us) know. We all learn from each other.

I think anyone at any level of tying welcomes constructive criticism of flies they post on here-thats the point isnt it. I dont think i have seen novices "slaughtered" on here(depends on how you define it)

all the best Nick

Actually I think a bigger problem is people simply not posting on threads started by new tiers. Couple of tips to help with that, not directed at anyone in particular, just sharing my learnings from posting as a beginner:

1) Try to post the best quality pictures you can, hard to comment on a fly you can't see properly
2) Try to couple your post with a question/observation on your own work for people to help with ("i found x difficult", "y doesn't look quite right", "how can I make z better?)" as this helps people give specific advice rather than "good for a beginner, will catch fish" type responses (or nothing at all).
3) Don't post 20 different flies, or lots in the same thread all at once. Focus on 2/3, get some feedback and come back for more.

If anyone else has any tips or observations feel free to add to this

Who's been slaughtered? Haven't seen any evidence of that on here, 'specially if the poster is a beginner and asks for advice or indicates that they'd welcome comments. Sometimes there is 'Emperor's New Clothes' syndrome and if the flies are really God-awful, then the obvious lack of response speaks volumes in itself.

i havent seen the type of criticism your stating, if certain peoples comments seem a bit harsh if there right there right! its better to hear something you can better the fly with..
look at this way.. if no'one can put down the fly you shown then its close to flawless, which is what you want i pressume.. if you want to get the stage of immaculate tying you need to practise (tying methods)
then you know you can look at a pattern and almost auto pilot the pattern.
as you mainly tye wets it should be winging methods palmering and sparser proportions (from my observation) also you have to remember you cant build a good house on a **** foundation.. keep the base thread (even) as much as poss.. for example a flatter wing to the body needs the thread to be close to level with the body.. compensate with a slimmer body so you dont get a bulky head (tying methods)

your a cheeky G*t i remember you trying to prompt me in showing some of my flies incase they wer as bad as yours
pot calling the kettle black
your not a begginer anyway, you dont stay a beginner

I would say the people on here are generally too nice to be honest .

There's a bit of banter when you've been around a while, and there are some superb tyers here who will provide honest constructive criticism if you ask for it, but I don't class that as a slaughtering.
