hi could anyone tell me the proper colour the yellow owl body is supposd to be.

the only fly i know of is simply called owl,dressing as follows:
body: mixed cream and gold coloured mohair.
wings:from yellow owl wings.
hackle yellowish dun cocks hackle.

The original Yellow Owl is a Loch Leven fly and is described in Book 2 by Tom Stewart published in 1964 as:

Size 12 or 14 hook. Dress the Yellow Owl by tying in a few fibres of dark partidge hackle as a tail. Then tie in a piece of black cotton thread(ordinary tying silk is too fine) with which to rib the primrose yellow floss silk body. Add a dark partridge hackle at the thraot and corresponing strips of hen pheasant wing feathers for the wing.

Davie McPhails fly is a modern adaptation of the original and can be a very successful fly on it's day.

the original was a cahill thread body and brown thread i believe but i might be wrong.

Interesting. I had no idea the original was a winged wet. The modern version is a country mile from that! For further comparison, heres Dave Downie's version.
