Default Tying with beads.

Hi folks,

Is there a formula for what size bead goes with what size hook?

I'm wanting to tie a few PTN & GRHE with a bead head.

All help will be useful.

Cheers

Simon

I agree with Jim on sizes, but would only add that the bead weight depends on how you wish to present the fly. Briefly; tungsten for fast/fastish streams for a quick descent and for keeping the bead small, brass/copper for medium flow/stillwater, glass for higher in the water/slower sink. Then there is aluminium, plastic etc., mainly for visual effect.

Great Question! As this is a subject that's driven me 'nuts' for ages. But to expand the question; the 'problem' I've had is getting the danged things up/around the bend of a given hook. (I can crimp down the barb.)

Hook choices???????????????

I've started to use barbless hooks so I'm hoping that won't be a problem

depends on the sharpness of the bend with which size bead you wish to use

Why, Freda Two simple steps to bead perfection (if such a thing exists )

1. Choose a bead that doesn't fall off at the eye.
2. Does it look right?

Best off in yer daughters hair though.... with a nice genetic grizzle saddle hackle
