Default Delicacy Vs Durability

Which camp do you fall in?

There are delicate flies as an example tyed with CDC which catch fish but are rendered largely unfishable thereafter due to fish slime and a battering and need to be changed.

There are durable flies which can be driven on over gravel drives and still catch fish and can be used again immediately afterwards.

Do you tie your flies just to catch one fish and tye on again or do you tye flies, that when popular with the fish, stay on the leader to catch another?

Or don't catch fish anyway.

I tie both.

I don't tie flies that don't catch.

That is the right answer of course.

Scenario

The hatch kicks off you choose the right the fly - you catch.

You have no idea when the hatch will end. Could be in five minutes or longer.

Change time for a fly is how long...............?

I tie both as well.

I'll use delicate flies if the hatch suits it or if the fish maybe haven't taken anything else.

However for trout that are taking readily it comes down to durability

Loopy, I much prefer delicate flies like a silver buzzer I tie up it is a one fish fly and I suppose all flies are tied to catch 1 fish and any more are a bonus, many years ago I was asked by a mate why a fish took his fly on the drop which was brand new out of the box which he cast it straight out and did not wet it, the only answer I could come up with was that there was air bubbles trapped in his black chennile lure which would cause the lure to have silver bubbles wrapped around the chennile, he never caught on that lure for the rest of the day.
Do you think our flies can trap air in them which we don't consider at the time.
Some times I tie flies that don't work, sometimes I tie the wrong colours in or overdress them it's trial and error and thats just the way I like it.

Im not camp at all I know some on here are though

I mainly tye flies to withstand several fish and quite often once they start to get a bit battered they still catch.

I suppose that I'm also in the "both" camp as well, however I do tie to get the maximum durability out of the constituent materials.

i Think tying can incorporate both of these aspects.

When i am tying my dries with dubbed bodies or say stripped quill bodies i always use varnish before starting my turns to help stick the fly together and keep it lasting longer.

Really does seem to make the difference
