Default colour of a greenwells feather?

Just been searching through some really old capes [hen] now these were put away some 30 odd years ago [forgot i had them] in seperate bags with the name of what they are but the ink has faded and now i am not sure what they are.I think they are greenwells but like i said i am not sure, the outside edge of the feather is brown or reddy brown and the centre of it is black,is this a greenwells?I know it would be easier if i could post a few pics but i aint that good on the computer, god i have only just worked out how to work the remote for the telly lol. thank you

To my mind, the distinction between Greenwells and Furnace is a pretty fine one. They say furnace is a red game colour with black centre, while greenwells is ginger with black centre. Ye olde books also call for Greenwells to have black tips. There's a healthy body of opinion that prefers their Greenwells Glories to be tied with furnace rather than greenwells. It's just a bit darker.

No...its Furnace which has the black centre list as well as the black tips.Greenwells have the black center list only and can be light ginger in colour through to red.

On looking through the capes again and with the opinion of shmbo there are 3 that to my eyes look the same but not to hers, black centre deep red, black centre reddy brown, black centre ginger, thanks for the replies.Yes these have been wrapped up in the loft since the late 70s i was very suprised how good they look and with no lodgers.

Okay. I guess the furnace and greenwells hackles I've bought have just been miss-named then.
