Question hog help?

Just attempted my first ever hog I am kinda pleased but not as pleased as i should be. I watched a video on youtube and davie mcphail made it look so simple but i struggled. I used rabbit fur (not sure if this is where i went wrong) but when i was trying to tie it in, it kept splitting and kinda looked like a muddler head.. so i had to keep snipping or trying to wrap thread round to keep it down but this just bulked the fly up. Any suggestions on how to stop this?

Thanx in advance, Danny

Hold the hair firmly between forefinger and thumb on top of the hook shank, then pinch and loop thread to catch in the hair. Pinch and loop 2 or 3 more turns of thread tightly while still holding the hair firmly in place - this should help reduce splaying. It's also a good idea to have a base layer of well waxed thread on the hook shank first.

That is how i tie it in but this still happens, am I maby leaving too much excess before tieing it in? Will take on board the tip about the waxed thread though. Thanx

Are you possibly holding the hair too far away from the tie-in point?
The thread should be pinched and looped well inside the points of you fingers - as if your trying to hold the thread as well as the hair. Someone else may be able to describe this process better than I can!
The hair must be held very firmly in your fingers as well - at the end of the day it'll come with practice!

It sounds like you left the ends too long as the tie in point only needs to be 1 to 1 1/2mm.
Im not too sure why you are trying to use rabbit as it will have a lot of under fur and also soaks up water and will sink.
I would suggest getting some deer hair and then trying it , but it will take practice to get it right.
