Unhappy Fish slayin' nymph

I popped into Snowbee a few weeks back to replace some tungsten bead GRHEs....Meanwhile the fella says.... Ooooo we've got these under the counter ... And pulls out some new designs of nymph that they were about to stock... Anyway I bought some.

Last night my nymph was banging into Dartmoor wild brownies like nobody's business.... And loosing them just as quickly Then a big one gave my rod a shake and promptly buggered off again after I lowered my rod tip by accident Never mind, then another and another.... I was busy teaching my son who was down the bank at the time and was taking my attention, so I put it down to this.

I thought the pattern so effective that I went to put it on my point again tonight as a wave of realisation came over me....... It was barbless!!!!!!!!!!!!

I mean what's that all about? I reckon the sales fella must go around converting people to veggie burgers by stealth as well

BUT! It is very effective and I only tie salmon and sea trout tubes and singles (its all I have the patience for ) so are there any of you 'pro' or 'semi pro' providers of ties for the exchange of beer tokens up for tying me a handfull of these? (with barbs!)

Its a great looking fly and probably the god damn' easiest thing you could ever tie. Its just a gold ribbed black beaded hares ear !

Looks like Coq De Leon for the tail, hares ear mix of some sort for the body, small gold oval tinsel for the rib and then maybe a turn or so of peackock glister for a throax. And then a black tungsten bead, might have a weighted underbody.

Dont see why the barbless hook will be losing you fish though I fish with nothing else and land about 80% of the fish I hook ? Keep your rod tip high and a well tensioned line and the fish should stick

Quite so Provided you know you are fishing barbless and arent watching up and down the bank for an 8 year old who has just hooked his first ever fish

If you ask me, you should always have a well tensioned line and a high rod tip, regardless of what your doing. And having the lad fish barbless from a young age will help him out alot in the future because he isnt relying on the barb to hold the fish, he's doing it himself. Im 17 and have been fishing barbless for 3 years now and It certainly helped teach me how to play and hold a fish better.

I wasn't being intentionally cheeky in my reply, just stating a point which I thought might do you some good. Obviously you took it the wrong way

So a hare's ear nymph then. And barbless.

Whatever next - the wheel?
