Default Tying waste bin or save?

When you are tying do you throw everything that is waste or save some things? For example when using whiting farm type long hackles I save the tips for wings. I also save some of the thick end for tails.

That's about it for me . There must be dozens of things that can be saved for other uses-any ideas/tips? Tips .

I've been tying with cdc tonight and the fly only needs the tips of three feathers, over half is waste. I've kept them to perhaps shred to make dubbing-not sure if that's an idea but going to try.

So c'mon give us new tyers some ideas...what do you save and why?

Chris.

I save everything that is possibly useable... Even down to end cuts of oval, tinsel, wire etc, I have about 20 x 3cm bits in the top of my box - Well you never know, do you

New tyers, you having a laugh Chris, you are a bleeding pro mate.
I keep some feather stalks for making the antenna for large sedges, and some CDC off cuts.

Call me cheap but waste bits 'n' bob are left on the my table in the playroom until which time I decide to move to the lounge for a change of scenery. Clearing the playroom table, I just scoop all the waste up and spread it on the lounge table. Back and forth until I accumulate enough waste to stick it and store it in Tesco food bags. Rummaging through the bags the other day, I found quite a lot of dark red holo. Treating it like saffron now.

Tied my first 18 months ago, I reckon that's new. Had five attempts to get a bloody ptn right last week . Anyway why do you keep the cdc?

Chris.

I save everything possibly useable too... but I judge that 3cm long bits of wire are not useable! I sometimes feel a bit stingy about it but then I remember how much the materials cost and how I'm privileged to have them now.

Sometimes i use bits off my desk such as hackle fibres bits of dubbing ,fritz that has come off the core-anything small really ,and dub it onto the bodies of cased caddis patterns.Often i strip them down again when i have sobered up but sometimes the results can be great

all the best Nick

I save the little bits of the fritz all those little strands and mix them to make shrimps it's great for the body's and the sealy bags make great strips for putting over the shrimp backs , also for wings .
I throw nothing out hence some of the strange flys in my collection

I normally bin the lot. Having seen this thread, good call Chris. It's obvious that a few bits can be used for other things. Off to look in the waste bin.
