Cap'n Fishy will become famous soon enough
Default Rootbeer - the legend continues...

Further to Matt's rootbeer suspender buzzer thread, there have been a lot of folk trying to get their hands on the stuff.

I ordered some of the correct stuff, 'Gliss N Glow' MOP rootbeer, from the outfit in Finland. they sent me some, which turned out to be plain rootbeer It is completely different from the MOP. It's a kind of uniform bronzy colour. It wasn't worth sending it back, so I ordered again, making sure they knew they had sent the wrong stuff, but I am not too sure how well they understand The Queen's English

I am still waiting for the second pack. Meanwhile (1), I tried getting some from the Estonian chap. He sent it, but it never arrived. I contacted him and although he had been bought out by 'someone' he said he would send more when he got it in.

Meanwhile (2) I found a pack on Edge fishing tackle in the USA. Only problem was the usual extortionate price of getting so much as a fart sent over the pond . I asked about getting a bulk order sent over - seeing as how so many folk are after it I thought it wouldn't be against trading rules to let folk have it at cost. We agreed on a one-off order he would send personally at a reasonable rate... only problem was he only had one pack in stock! He said he would contact me when he got more in.

Meanwhile (3) Andrei in Estonia (we were all on first name terms by now) contacted me to say he had got more in and would send it. Sure enough, it arrived a couple of days later by registered delivery Well done, Andrei

Meanwhile (4) I let the guy at Edge know I got some from Estonia, and he asked me for Andrei's contact details so he could get some from him! How come it is so easy to get in the Baltic states when the rest of the world is bereft

Anyhoo, did a couple of buzzers to give it a run-out...

First, the plain rootbeer (caveat emptor) over red thread...

I should point out that I use black T-shirt paint to build up a wee thorax hump but my T-shirt paint has gone all thick and tacky and I need to get a new bottle!

Second, here is the olive MOP that I already had and used on those Klinkhammers...

Next, I tried the fabled rootbeer MOP over black thread...

Finally, the MOP rootbeer over red...

I think I like the last one myself. I always have this in my head when I am tying buzzers...

They probably look nothing like that to the fish half the time, but you know how it is - if it gives you confidence...

However, I prefer the olive-over-red to the rootbeer-over-black, and I honestly think that if you can't get the rootbeer, then olive is just as good. In the end it became nothing more than a challenge to get my hands on the damned stuff

Interesting how a couple of random packets of nondescript sparkly stuff seemed to trigger so many people going on a worldwide search! I've had loads of people ask me about it as if it's some sort of panacea/holy grail. I think it boils down to being a material that looks particularly good to us anglers. Do flies incorporating it catch significantly more fish than otherwise? Nope.
That said, if your pattern inspires confidence etc etc etc.......

Nice buzzers cap'n. The last one certainly has the look of love!

The lack of availability of this particular product has come up a couple times. Has anyone contacted Umpqua Feather Merchants and asked who sells this/their stuff in the UK? http://www.umpqua.com/

Two very good shops you can contact for 'hard to find's' are Flyfishusa (Welches, Oregon and RedShed (Peck Idaho). Both have excellent web sites and carry an extensive line of fly tyeing materials. Better yet both ship on a very regular basis to the UK.

Nice ties
I'd very much like to see a MOP rootbeer-bodied buzzer pattern with a dubbed Chadwicks 477 thorax with natural condor herl wing cases with jungle cock cheeks.
I reckon it'd be a real killer!
