Default Tiny black fly - Suggestions needed

Hi guys

Some of you will know how my "new" fly has been a huge hit for me - details posted elseqwhere, and it continues to outscore all my other flies, including Griffiths , JT Olive and Klinks.

However the other evening i was really struggling, and guessed from the rise forms that the trout were gently kissing down tiny flies - probably black, as its too early for greenfly i think ?

I tried a Paul Proctor tiny fly ( angel hair tail from his piece on micro flies in last years T+S, but failed dismally ) . So far that fly has done nowt for me.

Eventually I tried my smallest Snipe and Yellow, fished dry/damp, and took a lovely trout.

However , i would like to tie up a tiny black fly and test this .

Can anyone suggest a really small pattern for those smutting trout on small rivers?

Thanks

i have used just seal fur on very tiny hooks sz18s and smaller, with a pre treated drop of gink night before and more on the day. can be deadly when all else fails.

My go to fly in this situation would be a Black Midge Dry Fly in sizes #22 to #26 Or a Black RS2 emerger in the same size.

I've tied up loads of miracle nymphs, in all different colours and I'm glad I read your post because I completely forgot about it this year and it was deadly last year, fished on a floating line, 2 droppers with them and a big dry (as an indicator) washing line.

Thanks for reminding me

This is how I attempt black midges dry, note it is much easier to tie these without tails
Biggest problem: I can't see the fly at all, never mind on the water.....

SBS for the RS2 can be found here http://web.me.com/ferencho/RS2/Welco...ng-the-RS2.pdf I keep black, brown, olive and dark duns in my box. Beaver or micro fine dubbing works a treat.

This is the midge, the tail is a bit long and wonky but you should get the idea.

Just for the record spider.............I knocked up your go to pattern, instead of the ducks ****, I klinked the pattern...chucked it out to wee brownies in a flat calm...expected nothing and was amazed as I lifted into a 3.5 inch brownie which literally sucked it under with no wake, as if it had taken the buzzer on the duo! You do have something, well at least this season. This was stillwater, not a river. I was impressed btw.
