What is the correct material to tie a BLOB?

Do we all us the same stuff ?

There are no set rules for blobs but fritz is the main material on the body. There are dozens of different colours of blob fritz, UV and fluoro and extra bits like tails and mirror flash added. There are bead heads and without.

My own simple formula is:
Partridge Big Mouth Nymph hook 10 or 12 (complies with comp rules)
Fire orange electric blob fritz
Orange thread
Orange marabou short tail
Glowbrite floss No5, Fire Orange head

Default Blobs

I'm a traditionalist ...especially when it comes to blobs or blob boobies !

For Pulling

The hook (single) should be a Drennen Trad Wet Size 8...strong with an excellent/perfect gape...and yes you can still get a very close copy alternative that is equally as good !

Or in a double a Kamazan B175 size 10 (with the eye bent down to fit the international rules gauge)....Partridge "Big Mouth Nymph Doubles" would be my 2nd choice for a double...(but avoid the Partridge "Big Mouth Double".....the gape is too wide,,and you'll bounce a lot of fish) - Partridge have 2 different double hooks in the "big mouth" series

Tail if used...UV Flashabou, Pearl Crinkle Flash or Marabou

As for the Fritz......the diameter of the material plays a big part in the colour of the fritz, as light passes through it and how the dye takes to the material etc........also how the material sits on the hook...you want it bulky but not too bulky or it will cover the point/gape of the hook and so comprimise hooking.

I only ever use transclucent fritz...i think it gives more vibrant colours...(i hate the UV or Boosted stuff..i think it's too much most of the time and puts fish off ! )

I also only ever use 15mm Fritz.....for standard blobs and boobies......and straggle etc...for nymph thorax's and patterns to be fished slower...

A good quality fritz, with good strong vibrant colour is vitally important in my opinion...especially when it comes to blobs...

As said above the only problem i find with wide gape hooks is alot of fish seem to bounce off. I fish them under the indicator too and alot of takes are constantly missed cos the gape is just too wide.

I tend to use kamasan b175 as they get better hook ups.

As with fritz i love the vampire plush. and the new gel core fritz is superb too(both 15-16mm)

Sorry to correct you guys. Its Partridge Big mouth doubles.Or Heavy nymph doubles(my choice).and the Kam double is the B270
For singles I use Kam B982 carp hooks, sz6 is still legal.15mm fritz for standard blobs and 8mm for small blobs.

As the other anglers, who have responded have indicated, the standard fritz for normal sized blobs is 15mm. There is obviously a difference of opinion about hooks.

Good luck with your tying.
