I think that magnifying lamps have uses for some tasks. However having tried a couple, i find the magnifier gets in the way of actually tying. It's a barrier between me and the vice. I prefer a separate lamp, angled to suit, and a pair of reading glasses one size higher than i usually use for reading. In my case, from a pound shop.

Exactly the same here. The magnifier made me feel like a heart surgeon . Couldn't get the hang of that.

I've still got the lamp and use it just as a lamp. Thing is it's not very versatile being a single arm. Think I'll ring my local Maplins tomoz see if they have the same deal. I already feel I know the answer . At 20 quid it looks a cracking deal.

Pound shop for me too, 3x mag as opposed to 2x for reading.

Chris.

I have one of these lamps-they are worth the money for the light alone;bright and a nice natural shade of light. I only use the magnifier for very intricate work(you get used to the distances and depth appearing different)The arm can be adjusted so that it can be moved out of your field of view easily but the light still shines on the fly

all the best Nick

I got one of those, must admit the light is quite strong for 20watts, the only drawback I've had was that the protective flap that covers the lens snapped off at the hinge after just 3 month, don't know if the light shining through the gap made it brittle. Also make sure you pad it with enough cardboard or mousemats when you clamp it to your table as it can gouge quite an indent into the wood as time goes by. But at 20 quid still a good bargain.
