Hook types

Hi being new to fly tying, i was just looking at some patterns in a book i have and where it tells you which hook to use it will say size 8-12 wet fly or 4-12 3x, other patterns say similar, what does the 3x mean, if somebody out there could explain please i would be very gratefull Thanks Rod
