Default Naphthalene Crystals

Hi I am thinking of getting some of this stuff. does anyone know how much i have to put in a fly box to kill the bloody little nasties eating my creations. i am thinking letting it rain like sand in the sahara desert. 200 plus flies and half of them are gone.

Seriously though is it just a few grams or grains super glued to the inside of the box will that do it for a slightly larger than hand sided box? Or would a packet sized silica gel size plastic bag with small holes be ok.

am not wanting to try cedar blocks as cannt fit those into fly fly box.

And last question how much of these crystals should i then have to start worrying about my health?

I would avoid touching them and breathing the fumes, these are not good for us. Might not kill you but best to be safe with such things.
If I understand this correctly it would be best to place a small amount, maybe a few grams with the flies and then seal it all in a zip lock bag. the fumes need to build up to kill the wee beasties. you could also place them in the freezer for a few days. I am no expert as I hate the smell of the stuff and don't want it near me. That said I do have some stored with whole pheasant skins in the garage, I think the bag was an ounce and had no sign of problems.

The mothball situation

Agree with Darwin, anything other than flies should get froze and nuked twice, I you need naphthalene just buy something from veniards there enough in one bag to do an entire collection

Hi John,

I have a large number of capes and put a sprinkling of crystals underneath each cape which is sealed in it's own bag. I then seal this inside another bag, and then finally throw an extra pinch / sprinkling of crystals into the storage draw as another line of defence.

With the best capes being as expensive as they are, I guess you can't be to safe!

Draws that contain my CDC packs, peacock herl, etc, all receive a pinch / extra sprinkling of crystals, but do try and ensure they don't come into direct contact with the the feathers.

If your wife's complaining about the smell, then triple bag your capes and I'm sure they'll be both bug proof and any smell should be minimal, so keeping your wife happy!

If there's a stong smell of Naptha crystals when you enter your fly-tying room, or opening a draw on your storage cabinets - then the bugs should give your capes a wide birth!!

.

tx for the feedback lads,

As they are tied up already i cannt nuke the flies ie 200 hooks. I have done the freeze trick before and they always seem to survive. kinda boiling water and freezing and fingers crossed they are all dead. with me thats 50-50 at best.

So kinda looking for a more permanet solution if you know what i mean lol.

Do the crystals kill off any eggs ? just wandering.
