Default Question for salmon/ seatrout fly dressers

Evening boys wondering why marabou is not often used in the construction of the above , I dont have a great deal suitable animal hair ,although ruby our springer has kindly donated to the cause , but do have marabou in a few suitable shades , not that I am a slave to convention but is there a technical reason for its omission .
PJ.

I can't see any 'technical' reason why not to include and experiment with marabou in sea trout/salmon dressings. I've often pondered this myself, and all I've come up with is maybe its associations with trout fishing and 'stockie bashing' have made the sea trout/salmon dressing cognoscenti turn their noses up.
Give it a go, and show us your wares, and maybe some of the tyers on here might furnish you with a couple of ideas too. I can't think of any negative factors against using marabou at all, only positives... it's got heaps of mobility, a great range of colours.... and it's cheap!

I use marabou, wound as a hackle on tube flies. You would not believe the movement off it in the water. You'll want to eat the fly yourself.

Wow lads they both look great, the contrasting styles show how versatile the material can be and like you say Scratch easily affordable.I have a few efforts myself which I will post when I get back home. Thanks PJ

I dont do salmon flies but certainly use it in sea trout flies.
Most sea trout flies you see are usually based on traditional flies which dont include marabou.
The 2 colours that I seem to use most are white and orange.

I like to use Marabu for some of my Seatrout flies when they are for use in very low and slow water flows. I like the idea of the extra mobility which it imparts to the fly in such conditions.
Tie them both as a wing and as a wound hackle.

Point taken salmoman the stronger flows would impede that lovely pulsing action ,the pots and flats would see it at its best. PJ

Paddy, in heavier flows I use a cock hackle underneath the marabou to give it support, and obviously hair winged flies also give plenty support to make the marabou effective, and not just collapse along the hook/tube.

Even though I know very little about tying for the tourists , I guess profile and mobility would be the main concern , thanks very much for all your help lads ,I wonder if minkie strips might be a step too far ,LOL . PJ.
