Default Veniards Centipede Legs (mini) Warning

Having just bought 3 colours of the aforementioned legs, I must warn tyers of how poor quality they are. The legs are barred and look fantastic, however, after tying a fly with them I noticed that the barring just rubbed off with finger contact. It really is pathetic considering they cost £3.50 for a wee pkt. All they are is sheering elastic.

You can get the same effect twisting a strand of elastic then running and skimming a pantone pen or similar along the length. Unwound the strand is barred.

I really can't believe how pathetic these bought legs are!! Like I say the barring comes off during tying the fly, let alone after being immersed in water, tying the fly on or dragged around by a fish.

Poor product!

I bought silli legs, orange and black barred, cannot scrape of the barring with my thumb nail. Cannot remember the make though as I put them in a clear plastic zipper bag.
I find some Veniards products over priced and of poor quality. If I'm searching for materials and it comes up veniards, I'll search again for another supplier.

Veniard's only "buy them in" from other suppliers. They don't make anything themselves, they're wholesalers not manufacturers. Hence if they have to buy things in, then sell them onto someone else, who also has to make a profit..... as well as both parties covering increases in VAT/postage + pay their staff/overheads/bank charges & all the other things that businesses have to deal with, is it any wonder that prices sometimes look expensive ?

send them to veniards in the origanal packaging, along with your concerns and i am sure they will check the rest of the product. If it is faulty they will then chase up the supplier of the product. They might even send you a replacement.

So presumably they will always search for the cheapest option in order to make the best 'turn'.

I don't even have their plastic packaging now. I put the three colours in a zip seal bag and stuck the stickers on from the original pkts for reference

These aren't the silicone legs as somebody mentioned, which are fragile tbh.

I bought them on a debit card, so I'll take them back at some stage, or I may contact veniards. As I say, it really is pathetic how easily the barring comes off. One rub between index and thumb and it virtually gone.

I wanted to pre-warn tyers as the pkts are all sealed up and there is no way of checking before buying.

As you say, John, Veniards are basically middle-men; they 'badge' stuff. So it's all about figures rather than quality, therefore most Veniard products, for the reasons you give above, are either over priced or poor quality, or both. Can you think of an exceptional Veniard product that also represents good value?

Flylamberhurst, Orvis are wholesalers/retailers & as such they do not manufacture any fly tying products.

When I started tying, in the late 1960's Veniard's were the ONLY people in the material supply business - or at least as far as the angler/amateur tyer was concerned. They still hold a very considerable stake in the market as their well known packets can be seen on virtually every tackle dealers shelves. It's a tradition, at least as far as the trade is concerned. Many tackle dealers will only ever go to one supplier, as it minimizes book-keeping/admin etc. & if that supplier can "supply" the majority of the dealers needs, then why change? The market has grown beyond all recognition since those early days, as has the supply-chain.
