Hi Horses
Ice dub is a synthetic shiny/sparkly product. HareLine carries it, not sure of the originator. See here for an example

Yup, it is synthetic reflective strands. Best used if blended with other material of a non reflective nature. Although used quite frequently on it's own for a variety of Czech nymphs. On it's own, it's not really that easy to dub with.

Yeah, it's the ongoing debate. There are thousands of materials out there, and they all make some sort of difference somewhere, weather it's to the fish, the angler, or anything else. The difficult thing to understand for most people, is that trout particulargly, are at the best of time, fairly opportunistic feedes, so if they think it might be food, they will eat it. The fly should have the basic proportions of the trouts food, and their basic behavioral characteristics, ie how it swims, the depth is swims etc, so most successfull flies, are also made to behave successfully by the angler. I don't think this has much to do with tying materials per se, although some materials do influence sink rates, and aid in achieving the correct movement of the fly. The bottom line, is that the way the fly is fished, is going to have more influence of catch rate than the fly with any particular material. If you beleieve that you need a particular material to be able to make a particular fly for a specific purpose... then it's well woth having it and tying with it.
If you are aware of the advantages that any particular material can do for your fishing, you are well on the way to success.
