Question catching on my very own fly?

hi all,

i've never really thought about tying my own flies but realised today...there must be HUGE satisfaction in catching a good fish on a fly that you tied yourself!

this may be an incredibly stupid question so sorry in advance for my ignorance...but....can you literally just make any pattern you wish and see if it works....obviously i mean to imitate something or other but in theory, anything at all!?

Default catching on my very own fly?

You can't beat catching a fish on a fly tied by yourself.

Better off starting by learning to tie a couple of patterns first then once you get the hang of it you can add some extra to them.

Say a partridge & orange then once you can tie that ok add a wee bit off dubbing just before the hackle and it gives it a twist.

thanks...

i'm defnately going to have to start tying my own, i bet its such a good feeling to have fish go for your own pattern....so best to try something simple, tried and tested and once i can do that...move onto my own variations?

I now have got rid of every fly in my boxes that hasnt been tied by myself. So now its great to know that every fish i catch i caught on my own fly.

Cant beat the feeling

Go for it, nothing better than catching, or indeed having others catch, on your own flies. I predominantly fish with my own flies these days, the only bought flies I fish with are some lures, blobs and boobies on the rare occassions that I use them, because I don't take any pleasure in tying them.

Definitely much more satisfaction in catching on your own flies! I started tying flies about 3 years ago now and all the flies in my boxes are now tied by myself or from swaps on here.

Extremely rewarding when you devise a variation to solve a porblem and i works!

Some people even have the creativity to come up with completely new patterns (beyond me) just lok at the crayfish that was posted on here a few days ago!

Tying, and hopefully catching on your own flies is very rewarding and adds a different facet to the whole experience.

I caught my first fish on a dry fly this week on a home made grey duster.

Was my most exciting experience of fly fishing yet, and I can highly recommend it.

Good luck if you decide to start tying!

Very true. Remember my first one to come on a 'home grown' was to a poorly tied Shipman's buzzer

Very satisfying. Mine was on a diawl bach.

I suppose the next goal is to catch on a fly you've invented yourself, for a specific scenario. I've caught plenty of fish on generic beadhead nymphs I've tied that I would be hard pressed to put a name to - including some tied with combings from my cat, but can't really lay claim to a successful pattern of my own devising. My foam arsed apps caught me a fish, but so did ordinary apps that day, so the jury is out on whether that is any advance, and anyway it's still just a variant. I tied up some lures specifically aimed at catching perch. They didn't catch me any perch, until I tried to catch trout with them, when they did. I suppose that's a success of sorts!

as others have said, just go for it mate. i'm slowly getting rid of all my bought flies and replacing with home ties. mine are not great by any standards but they do catch me fish.
