Default Picric may-mayfly

Another cracking pattern for the upcoming mayfly season.
It has that natural drake mayfly colour and a great pattern for fishing during the early hatches.

Tying-recipe
Tail-Cock pheasant centre tail fibres 3-4
Rib-Oval silver or gold
Body-natural raffia
Body hackle-Light olive dyed picric
Head hackle-Mallard flank dyed in picric acid.
Thread-olive.

Very nice flies, think they would be good for the seatrout also, after the big moths come out.

Sonnaghan, Several years ago, I bought an Egyptian goose skin from Steve Cooper, & there's no feathers on it anything like those. The ones on my skin are nearer a bronze mallard colouration, but a lot softer. And in my humble opinion to delicate for general tying; fine for tails though but in wound hackles & winging they'd break up in no time.

Its definately mallard flank feathers dyed in picric acid. The acid gives it that olive/yellow colour.

Thank you both. Look first of all its a bril looking fly and a "fishermans fly". I have 2 packets of Egyptian goose infront of me which I bought from Cookshill last year and the striping is so like what is shown in the post. I appreciate the effect of the picric.
But here's where the mystery deepens. Before I posted I looked at Patsy Deery's book on Irish Mayflies. Towards the start he gived photos of the different feathers used for the hackles. Happy days his egyptian goose is like mine. But in the flies photod in the book using E goose the hackles look so much darker--not the same colour or striping as in the intro! But re-reading the intro, have the goose and the (WAIT FOR IT) summer duck got mixed up?. Because the summer duck has lovely fine striping too.
I tied up a few flies last week using ? goose or duck (what odds) and if tied in by the tip the fibres flare out lovely. If I had a decent camera I would show them.
Now that you have stuck with me to now, let me say I am profoundly colour blind.
Arkle I read on another board your woes re surgery. It really is a pisser to be ****** around like that. My job until a few years ago was to try fit in patients like you on my operating lists. The administrators screwed us up terribly and I felt like**** telling those patients that their surgery was cancelled. For most surgeons it is a bloody awful experience. Anyways for me it got so bad I packed it in when I was 60. Anyways enough of that. Good luck both of you
