Default what defines a good fly

i must say ive seen some beautiful flies on this forum from buzzers to fully dresed salmon flies there ss no doubt some of the best fly dresers in the uk no doubt but what makes a fly a good fly (looks, catch rate ) i must admt it i have slagged a few of my pals flees and ive taken a roasting myself but think personally beautiful flies dont catch anymore than a well tied fly and personally i think its time on the forum we started praising all the new fly dressers as we all started at sometime as i said im no angel but practice makes perfect so all i can say s guys keep at it and youll get there

I'd add to that if I may.

One that catches fish, doesn't fall apart and you have confidence in.

Good point about encouraging others humungus. I should do that more myself, although I do try. There are a lot of loiterers around here, you only have to look at the "views" count on any thread to see there are a lot of folk who take a lot and give nothing to this forum. If one or two of them took the time to post something constructive or encouraging the forum would be a richer place.

There are fly tyers and fly dressers.
I tie flies, not neat and tidy but they do catch fish and I enjoy tying them.
Seen some excellent flies on this forum tied by the members, wouldn't tie some of them myself as would not use them where I go fishing. Others gives ideas to try wheather it's shape, colour or materials. I wouldn't knock anyones attempts as I know what my first attemps were like.
Encouragement and constructive critism with hints and tips are the way.
Not only are some of these flies beautifully tied, but beautifully photographed as well. I didn't know how bad my tying was until I took some macro shots. Touching turns, could get a double decker bus between them.

mot, totally agree about the confidence thing, a fly you don't feel happy using won't catch you much.

humungus, I think mot means people not reply to flies that people post, eg I posted some flies tonight , 115 views and only 3 posts 2 of them where mine

I think a lot of the views come from guests browsing and not members.

The stats show more guests per day than members visit the forum.

True, and a fair few of those guests are nervous about joining and posting in case they get the p!$$ ripped out of them. Sure, 99% of the time its just banter, but they don't always realise that.
