Default Mixed bag

Here are a few pictures of recent ties, nothing spectacular, just playing with my camera really. All apart from the Alexandra were taken using the pop up flash, the results surprised me to be honest. It's blown a few highlights here and there, but generally looks pretty good to me.

A bit over exposed, but I liked it like this better than with a 'better' exposure.

Default Thanks.........

Thanks for the comments gents.

Dabhoy – the camera is an EOS550d with an EF-S 60mm Macro lens, I’ve had it a few weeks now but not had a great deal of time to do much fly stuff.

Cheers again - Steve

Dabhoy, he's using peacock sword feathers which are quite easily available.

Nice little selection there Steve, all eminently fishable although I might opt for a trifle more deerhair to increase the density of the muddler head. That would make it a bit less vulnerable to sharp teeth.

Losing your touch dabhoy? Very nice flies WF, like the first one the best for the fly and the photo, with black backgrounds its better if you use subdued light, like a lamp with some kind of diffuser over it as it dilutes the light source and gives a softer look to the subject. But new camera, lots to learn as I'm also finding out.

Cheers Arkle, I’ve been consciously thinning down my muddler heads! I’ve noticed that Savage Take, Scratch et al. seem to use a much smaller pinch of deer hair which gives a more open head, which aesthetically looks better (to me anyway). In my limited experiments the more sparsely tied flies fish in the surface, rather than on, it’s maybe a case of trying to get a muddler to do what a bumble naturally does though.

A bit more deer hair certainly helps to stop the fly getting swamped when there is a bit of a wave on though – but if it’s that choppy a booby works better anyway!!!!!

Wingman, yes, lots more experimentation needed, especially when artificially lit. I just used the pop up flash with a quick snoot made from a cornflake box with tissue over the end for diffusion. All hand held and snapped away. With a bit of work on the snoot I think the results could be pretty good.
