Default Dry Flies

Hi I'm new to fly tying and hav'nt even started fishing yet so a little advice if you don't mind please, I'm going to start fishing a small still water next week which has stocked rainbows and some brown trout, is there a hook size which is considered standard for dry flies, or what sizes would you recommend i tie. Thanks for your help Rod

Probably 12s to 16s. Black gnats working well for me at pressent in 16s, simple tie:
black thread,
fine silver wire, touching turns for about 4 turns at bend of hook only,
Wing - not compulsory but grey/white poly yarn (even hackle fibres will do) or a few strands of flat pearl lurex,
Black cock hackle.

Don't worry if the fly sinks, works well as wet just under the surface.

Default Try this.....

Ostrich herl buzzer - very easy tie.
12 - 16 hook, grey thread (or black, doesn't really matter) tie in finest wire for rib, tie a length of poly yarn along back to stick out about 3 mm each end, tie in ostrich herl, natural or blue dun, both at bend, wind herl to eye, rib in counter direction with wire through herl to eye, form head. Fish static and well ginked up. I don't bother with varnish, they get pretty well chewed up pretty quick.
