Default Different Thread used on this you tube tying clip???

Hi Everyone
I'm just starting to take to this whole fly tying idea, been fly fishing for a while but never really attempted to tie my own.

I found this video on you tube which gives close up tying instructions for an elk hair caddis!!

The Thread the tier is using seems to be different to the normal cotton I've seen, is this a particular type and if so does anyone know where I can get some.

I often have trouble making good touching turns and was wondering if the flatness of this would make things easier

Many Thanks

Hi thesaintlyone,
The thread in the video looks like UTC Ultra thread, you should be able to find it at any fly shop. Getting good at touching turns takes practice, nothing more.

A wee trick to get touching turns is to use the waste piece of your thread.
Once you have locked on the initial turns and you have left a tail of thread, grip this tail and pull it tight and at an upwards angle of around 45 degrees.
As you wind the main thread down the hook it will come against the tail end and slide down the angle to butt up nicely against the previous turns.

Usually UTC is a better thread for doing things like buzzers if you want touching turns likke that, as the thread lays flat on the hooks. UNI thread on the other hand doesnt lie flat on the hook..

Using UTC 140 for an elk hair caddis strikes me as making life difficult for yourself. You need a fair bit of bite and pressure to tie in elk hair and a bonded, round, thread like UNI does that much better in my view. And 140 denier is pretty thick for a smallish hook.
