Default Given Some Day Fly Hooks!

An old mate gave me these from yesteryear.

These are what I tied on them.

The close up shows off my poor tying, as usual.

Tried the black one today, several takers but no hook ups, fished on a dropper. Changed to the point fly, 6 takes resulted in 2 fish. Hook came out of both fish once in the net.

Verdict still out.

Poor at hooking up into fish. I think the fish nosed them as they tried to take them from behind. I also had fish boil over them and still no hook up. Probably why they didn't take off. I wonder if they ever got the patent?

Interesting hooks but they look a bit chunky for the style they are used for.

Think they might have been intended to help artificially replicate any of the mayfly genera but they look quite weighty, it doesn't say what size they are though.

Hi Wobbly Face,
I think you got that one right.
Does the package have a date on it? I would think You have a very interesting bit of fly history in your possession.

Not really that old ,they are Peter Mackenzie Philps fly body hooks .
He sold them through his excellent cataloque probably late 70s early 80s .
I had a fwew packs which I shared with some friends ,caught a few on the hook but found no advantage to them ,and they were not easy ties !

Now that is one cool looking hook. But as said before it seems maybe to heavy for a dry fly.

Im looking forward to hearing about whether they float or not?

Andy

I used to tie commercially for Peter, & still have some of those hooks. They are TERRIBLE hookers though. as when the fly is taken - the body extension fouls a clean take as it's rigid. Made for him by Partridge, in the days when the late Alan Bramley was at the helm.
